How to return Undamaged items within 14 days after delivery?
Please email us or call us stating your intent and reason for your return, providing us with your receipt number, name and the date of the purchase.
If you wish to return a damaged item, see DAMAGES.
Within one business day, you will be given a RETURN authorization number. The customer is responsible to arrange shipping the item/s back to us and pay all return shipping costs. The customer MUST insure the package. It is your responsibility to file the claim in the event of any damage incurred during return shipping. Q: What is SPAGNA VETRO (SV)?
SPAGNA VETRO (SV) is our own unique brand. It is intellectual property of 'Spagna Vetro Appliances Inc.' CANADA and registered under the Canadian Trademark Law ( click HERE to see the certificate ). Although we may not be as popular as our BIG competitor's brands, our range hoods are considerably stronger and quieter than many range hoods out there! Q: I live in another province (outside British Columbia). Will I be charged sales tax?
We are required by law to charge GST (Goods and Services Tax) 5% or HST (12%-15%) tax on all purchases within Canada.

Q: I live in the USA. Will I be charged sales tax?
Shipments to the USA are NOT subject to any Canadian sales taxes. However, you may be subject to US Custom Duties, which you must remit to the US Postal Service when they deliver your package. For additional information kindly see USA Customers page.

Q: What is the shipping cost for a range hood?
The cost to ship most models of range hoods within Canada is FREE, or $69 to USA. If shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or any other location not specified, please contact us for a shipping quote.

Q: Is the hood width the actual measurement that is advertised?
No. They are between an 1/8" & 1/4" smaller than listed so that they fit properly into an opening of that nominal size.

Q: What's the best way to attach the range hood to the wall and where to cut the 6" opening and install the 120v plug?
Range hoods are very heavy and must be well-fastened to the wall studs. Do not hang a range hood on the drywall or plaster alone. Use the stud locator to find the studs and make marks for the screws. Use the drill bit (smaller than the screw shaft) and pre-drill screw holes. Don't use a drill bit that is too large; this could cause the range hood to pull away from the wall and cause injury. Q: What's the best way to clean the surface of my hood?
Stainless steel hoods should be washed regularly with a clean cloth, warm water and mild soap or dish detergent. Clean in the direction of the polish lines. Rinse well with clear water and wipe dry immediately. You may wish to apply light oil used for furniture polishing to emphasize its bright finish. Wiping regularly with mild soap/detergent and warm water.

Q: Do I have everything in the box to install the range hood?
In most cases, YES. Please check the your ceiling height first, and check the website. We always say what should be your ceiling height in order the covers ( for wall type hoods) and frame inside (for all island type hoods) to fit . Most range hoods come with decoration covers for up to 9' ceilings. Extensions for heigher ceilings are available for additional cost.
You will need to provide electrical plug, 6,7 or 8" rigit duct running to outside and cap with or without damper( if your hood vents outside). The flexible duct provided in the box for some units is not the main duct. You sould use the aluminum flexible duct to make the final connection between the range hood and your rigit duct exhausting outside only.

Q: How often should I clean my aluminum mesh filters?
The aluminum mesh grease filters should be washed in your dishwasher approximately every month depending on the amount of usage. Wash often if your cooking style generates greater grease like frying foods or wok cooking. You cannot clean the nonducted charcoal/carbon filters; they must be replaced.

Q: Which is better, ducted or non-ducted?
Range hoods should be ducted to the outside of the home. While non-ducted filters trap some of the grease and odors from normal cooking, the humidity, smoke and heat will all be re-circulated back into the home. If the non-ducted filters are not regularly replaced, eventually the grease and odor catching effect will no longer protect your home from impurities.

Q: How far can I run my ductwork to exhaust my hood?
For maximum performance keep the duct straight and short. Use the shortest route with the fewest turns possible. 45° turns are better than 90° turns. Be sure to use an external roof or wall cap. If in doubt, consult a qualified designer/installer knowledgeable in ventilation or contact us.

Q: Can I exhaust my hood into my attic instead of out the roof or wall?
No. You should never exhaust air into spaces within walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces or garages. The humidity and grease collect in the space and present a huge fire danger. This is especially important to why we strongly recommend you to have a professional installer do this type of installation.

Q: How high of a CFM is your highest setting? What about the other speeds?
At the first and lowest setting, the output is about 300 CFM. CFM gradually increases to the highest setting up to 860 CFM.

Q: How much CFM do I need for my Range or Cook Top?
For conventional electric and gas ranges or cook tops, we offer a complete line of hoods that can fit your cooking needs with features you desire. For high output gas ranges or cook tops, the minimum rate of 1 CFM of ventilation per 100 BTU is recommended.

Q: How high should I mount my hood above my stove?
Most common installations require a range of 24"-32" between the bottom of the hood and the top of the cook top. This will provide the best capture area for cooking impurities. For high capacity blowers, the distance from the cooking surface to the bottom of the hood should be min 24" for electric (induction) cook tops, ansd min. - 30" for gas cook tops unless otherwise noted for a specific hood or range.The mounted height of the hood base above the cooking surface should not exceed 31" for both wall-mount and island-mount units. Recommended minimum for Spagna Vetro168 and 218 series is 28" above the cooking surface. The hood should be centered over the cooking surface. This will provide the best capture area for cooking impurities. Consult your local building codes and standards for more information.

Q: What does the CFM ratings mean?
CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. It is a unit of measurement used to describe the volume of air 'sucked' in by the range hood in one minute. The higher the CFM number, the greater the amount of air that is exhausted by the range hood. The recommended minimum hood capacity is 150 CFM to 160 CFM. For high output gas ranges or cook tops, the rate of 1 CFM of ventilation per 100 BTU is recommended. A separate ventilation system may be required for high performance range hoods; please consult your local building codes and standards for more details.

Q: What kind of warranty is provided for your products?
All products have a 1-year parts warranty. We keep replacement parts in stock in our warehouse and can send out replacement part(s) if needed.

If you purchase a range hood from USA or anywhere else outside Canada, you would have to pay GST, PST and DUTY upon receiving the vent hood. All appliances must have CSA, cETL or ULc safety certificate.

Q: How often do you update your website?

Q: May I reduce the duct size ?
We do not recommend reducing the duct size because it reduces the CFM and increases noise and vibrations .

Q: What is covered and what is NOT covered by your one year warranty ?
For one year after the original Invoice from "Spagna Vetro Appliances Inc. ", we will provide Free Of Charge replacement parts which are found to be defective under normal use and service for all our Spagna Vetro products .

What is Not Covered:

Q: Please give me more info on Charcoal filters (filtration version only)
This filter is neither washable nor renewable. It is used to catch unpleasant smells that develop when cooking. It should be mounted on the safety grille of the motor and replaced every 4 months. When unistalling, turn the filter counterclockwise until it snaps out of its position.The carbon filter is not supplied. It has to be ordered separately.

What type of range hood I need to buy?

The most important role of kitchen ventilation is to remove all the greasy, smoky, steamy, gaseous byproducts that you don't want hanging around in your kitchen. When it comes to the choice of the right range hood, it usually depends on the layout and structure of your kitchen, your local building codes, and your own style preferences.
Many of our new, innovative range hood systems use carbon filters. The carbon filters provide better, cleaner ventilation and may eliminate the need for an air duct that leads outside. In addition, the durability and effectiveness of carbon filters is far superior to that of conventional filters.
One of many advantages of range hoods is the ease of assembly. Many of our range hoods have a telescopic chimney which allows more freedom for adjustments to the placement of the range hoods. Our new range hood chimneys are also easier to bypass through rough walls which makes installation faster and easier.


 Why need a range hood?

There are many safety reasons for not trying to install or build range hoods systems. First of all, range hoods are in place to make sure that you direct dangerous fumes away from the rest of your home. They are also in place to help keep steam and smoke out of your kitchen as well as prevent smells from moving all around your home. 

The continued presence of cooking fats, grease, steam and odors are an ongoing problem in every kitchen. Every year, an average of 4-1/2 liters (1 gallon) of cooking fat deposits itself on the cooler surfaces of walls, ceilings and cupboards. These deposits condense and cause discoloration and dulling of paint work.

Range hoods filter out the kitchen grease saving you hours of cleaning, extending the time between repainting and giving you a cleaner, fresher kitchen, as well as protecting and adding to the value of your home.

How powerful does my kitchen hood fan needs to be?


The rate at which the kitchen hood can extract air from the kitchen should be matched to the size of the room. Larger rooms will need more powerful extractor fans in order to prevent bad odors. You can calculate the volume of your kitchen by multiplying its height by its length and width. You should be able to approximate the volume very easily, even if your kitchen is slightly irregular in shape. Once you know the size of your kitchen, you can work out how powerful the fan needs to be in order to achieve the rate of extraction you need. You should aim to choose a kitchen hood that is capable of completely replacing or cleaning the air in the kitchen at least eight times every hour, although more powerful fans which can replace the air at least twelve times an hour will be better, if you can afford them.

 Range Hoods Types:
There are few general types of ready-to-install range hoods. Within this sub-topic we'll briefly examine each of the types while also discussing some optional features.

     a. Island mount range hoods:
This type of range hood often accompanies an downdraft in which attachment to an exterior wall isn't an option. In many cases a retractable intake device is raised from the range or counter in order to pull air into exhaust ducts set below floor level. The ability to retract the range hoods and the sleek nature of many island range hoods models makes the island range hoods models more stylish than many under-cabinet models. Shown SV198Z2-I36/I42.


    b. Wall mount range hoods:
Large, stylish, and professional in appearance, wall mount range hoods continue to gain popularity among homeowners. Often used on exterior walls when a cabinet isn't available, wall mount range hoods resemble an upside-down chimney in appearance. Stainless steel finishes are common on wall mount range hoods, and wall mount range hoods models are considered the most stylish of the three types. Shown SV198D-30/36.


    c. Under-cabinet range hoods:
Traditional and usually the least expensive type of range hood, under-cabinet range hoods are, in fact, usually mounted under a wall cabinet and attached to an exterior wall. In many models, air is pulled out of the kitchen through an exhaust duct in the exterior wall. As a general rule, under-cabinet models aren't decorative or trendy.


    d. Microwave oven / Range Hood combo:
Combo units save space, but they are not very efficient. We DO NOT recommend using this type hood, because most of the space inside the unit is taken by the microwave oven and very small space is left for the blower. The CFM levels are very low and not recommendable for GAS COOK-TOPS. If you have a gas cook-top and long duct-work with many elbows, avoid this type.


   e. Buying a Built-in/ Insert Blower type hood:
This type of hood you need if you do not want your fan to be visible (only the bottom plate is visible), and have a wood or metal hood with opening on the middle for the built-in exhaust fan. If you already have a wood hood, be sure to cover all exposed wood with metal liner for fire separation. If you will have the insert over a GAS COOK-TOP, min 30" distance is required from any combustible material (check with your fire safety inspector). For complete Range Hood Installation will need insert blower and liner (Duct Size is determined by Blower chosen). Always purchase the insert and the liner first, before you start building the wood hood. It can be way easier for the cabinet company to make a perfect fit.   Ducted or re-circulating (non-ducted):

When you install range hoods, they can be either ducted to the outside or set up to recirculate the air within the kitchen. Most of our range hoods can by converted to ductless range hoods. You will need to purchase additional charcoal filter set, or ductless kit available under 'ACCESSORIES'.
With the recirculation option, most (not everything) of the grease and smells should be trapped by a special carbon filter. Moist air will still contribute to condensation problems and some smells may escape. However, with external ducting, the process of removing a lot of hot air quickly does mean the room gets a little cooler.

  Size of range hoods:
Most of the time our customers use the same size range hood as their cooktop size for all wall mount range hoods ( for better proportion ) and one size bigger (6" bigger) for all island type fume hoods.
With two pots on your cooktop, most hoods will cope pretty well, and won't let steam escape at the sides. However, most models won't cope very well with four pots of simmering water, particularly if they're only 30-in wide. The bigger the range hood, the more effective it will be removing steam and odours. If you have the space, consider fitting a 36-in wide range hood over a 30-in cooktop. The extra width on each side will catch more steam.

  Range hood filter types :
All range hoods have a filter to trap oil and grease from cooking. Most have reusable, metal mesh filters that will go in the dishwasher. Because the filters are quite large they are not easy to wash in a standard sink.

   a. Aluminum (mesh) filters
Most common, Replaceable filters, usually cost around 16$, you will find them under 'ACCESSORIES'. They are most of the time horizontal, collecting the oil on the surface, causing the color of the filter to change (to grey or brown color). Set your dishwasher to 'GENTLE' cycle when dish-washing this type filters.

   b. Baffle filters
The BEST range hood filters on the market today, replaceable filters but in 99% keep their shiny look and good performance for many years. Usualy made of the same 304 stainless steel material as the range hoods.
In many cases the baffle filters come with grease trap as well, and the filters are sloped towards the back, so any collected grease and moisture will drip in the grease collector at the back of the hood. Customers should clean the baffles and the grease chanel once a month, or every 30 hours of operation.

   c. Charcoal (carbon) filters.
Needed only for ductless applications, non vented hoods.
Non replaceable filters, for one time use only. Must be changed every 4 months for proper range hood performance.

  Number of range hoods fans:
Efficiency is not necessarily related to the number of fans. Some larger single-fan models can out-perform smaller two-fan models.

  Noise:
Fans can be quite noisy on full speed, and there's a tendency for noise to increase with performance. A range of fan speeds is therefore useful: you don't need the thing whooshing away if you're just scrambling some eggs. Noise levels can get up to 60 or even 66 decibels (dBA).

  Lighting:
A good range hood will provide enough light over the cooktop for you to see into the pots. Many models use only a single 40 watt bulb, which many cooks won't find adequate. Others use two bulbs, sometimes suffusing them with a perspex strip. Many of the more expensive range hoods provide much better light with halogen lamps with dimming options or suffused fluorescent bulbs.

  Range hoods maintenance:
Range hoods are not maintenance-free. You need to remove and wash the filter, clean the body of the hood and occasionally change a light bulb. You should be able to perform most of these tasks easily.

  Range hoods controls:
It's pretty standard for hoods to have their controls in an easy-access position on the front. However, some older models have sliding switches that are a little tricky to set in the right position. Touch controls are easier to use and all of our range hoods uses touch controls.

  Range hoods Clearance from a Range/Stove:
Min 24" clear space must be present between the electrical stove and the range hood, 30" min clearance is required from gas stoves.

  Back-draft Damper- What is that??
As air can travel out a ducted system, so can it travel in. To prevent this, most systems are equipped with back-draft flaps located at the fan box exhaust port. To stop cold air from coming in, check these flaps from time to time to make sure that they're not clogged with grease and stuck in position. The exhaust hood (outside vent) has either flaps or louvers. Make sure they are free of obstructions. Also make sure that ducting joints are sealed with special tape to prevent condensed water from dripping into closed spaces between the walls and damaging the wood structural members and insulation. Most of our hoods come with back-draft dampers included in the box, but if you already have external damper (attached to the cap outside the house), you don't need the use the one in the box. Two dampers will reduce the CFM levels

  Range Hoods Maintenance:
Wipe the exterior and interior of the range hood regularly. When you need to give it a thorough scrub, use a solution of hot water, dishwashing detergent, and ammonia to cut the grease; wear rubber gloves. Clean metal mesh filters when they are dirty, and replace the filters on nonvented range hoods every six to nine months or as often as the manufacturer recommends. * Exterior cleaning:
Clean periodically with hot soapy water and clean cotton cloth. DO NOT use corrosive or abrasive detergent (e.g. Comet Power Scruv, EZ-Off oven cleaner), or steel wool/scoring pads, which will scratch and damage the stainless steel surface. For heavier soil use liquid degrease such as "Forumla 409" or "Fantastic" brand cleaner.


* Interior cleaning:
Warning! Be sure the unit is turned off before you clean it. Also avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the light bulb or light bulb socket. Clean the interior of the range hood with a standard household cleaner.


* Fan motor care:
Most range hood fan motors don't need any maintenance. Over time, the motor and bearings may become stiff because of the constant heat, humidity, and grease to which they're exposed. Also over time, the blower wheel gets greasy and dirty, which can slow down the fan or cause vibration. Remove the wheel and clean it with a degreaser. Then, if the fan is still slow or if it vibrates, you need to replace the fan motor.


* Cleaning the grease trap/cup:
You can clean the grease trap/cup in your range hood by soaking it in a grease cleaning solution until all the grease is dissolved and then washing it with warm, soapy water.

Installing the Range Hood:

Range hood distance from the cook top.

Range hoods need to be correctly positioned in the center above a stove to draw away smoke and fumes effectively. We often recommend a distance between the countertop or burners and the hood to be min 24" for electrical and 30" for gas burners. Measure that distance, starting from the stovetop and moving upward on the wall behind the stove. Place a piece of masking tape on the wall and make a pencil mark on the tape at the correct location.

 

Make a level line.

Use the bubble level. Lay it against the wall and evenly position it with the height of the mark. Then apply a horizontal line of masking tape or low-tack painter's tape at the height of the mark; the length of the tape line needs to equal the width of the range hood. This tape should be removable and protects the wall from permanent measurement marks. Now lay the bubble level in place and make a series of marks to the width of the range hood. Use a straight edge along these level marks and draw a pencil line.

 

Make vertical lines to position the range hood.

Use a straight-edge framing square or a plumb-bob to find the true vertical position of the range hood. Many range hoods have square sides, and this line will set the position of the range hood side edge. Again, use painter's tape in the general location and make your final marks and lines with a pencil.

 

Locate the studs.

Range hoods are heavy and must be well-fastened to the wall studs. Do not hang a range hood on the drywall or plaster alone. Use the stud locator to find the studs and make marks for the screws. Use the drill bit (smaller than the screw shaft) and pre-drill screw holes. Don't use a drill bit that is too large; this could cause the range hood to pull away from the wall and cause injury. Use 2x4 wood across the studs for your range hood support if necessary, click on the diagram below for more info:

6" Vent installation.

This range hood requires 6" diameter exhaust opening for best performance. The exhaust hole of the fan is located 15" above the bottom of the hood . Install the 6" opening min. 85-90" from the floor. Keep the opening as close as possible ot the center above the stove. Avoid 90 degree elbows and exhaust through the closest wall or roof. If you have smaller exhaust( 4",5" dia.), you will need to use duct reducer which will lower the CFM by 10-20%, but the hood will still work fine. If your exhaust opening is bigger, your range hood will perform better. You will need to use different type reducer 6"-8", or 6" - 7"..etc. Charcoal-filter or recirculated range hoods do not require external vents.

 

Stainless steel cover ( flue) installation- Vaulted & Drop ceilings

This range hood comes with adjustable cover, that covers ceilings from 8' to 9'. If you have a bulkhead ( drop ceiling) and your ceiling height is less than 8', you most likely will need to cut the cover at your local metal shop, or using angle grinder. To finish it, put a molding around the edge. It you have vaulted ceiling, again you will have to cut the cover on the spot, we do not offer kits that can fill up the gap.

 

Electrical wiring.

Our range hoods require external power for the fan and light to operate. All hoods come with approximately 3 feet of wire ending with PLUG for standard PLUG IN connection and require 120v receptacle ( you could cut the plug for hardwire connection if necessary). You may need to call in a licensed electrician to perform the work. Install the standard 110v plug min. 85-90" from the floor , 2" left or right from the center above the stove.

 

Mounting the range hood.

It is a good idea to get someone to help lift the range hood into place. Cut some supporting blocks ahead of time and use them to assist in bracing the range hood while you set it in place. When the range hood is well-supported and perfectly positioned, use screws to fasten it into the wall. Most range hoods come with 2 main mounting brackets, but you could put additional screws from the inside the hood for additional support.. Remove the painter's masking tape and temporary supports at the end.


What is "Makeup air"??


When a range hood operates, it draws air from inside the house to the outside and creates or contributes to a slight vacuum in the house. The resulting negative pressure can be serious. If the negative pressure is strong enough, it can cause the furnace and other fuel-burning appliances to backdraft dangerous gases such as CO into the home. All exhaust fans, including clothes dryers, must have an adequate supply of air. The air needed for this purpose is called “makeup air” .
Although make up systems are not mandatory in all regions some regions have created legislation to ensure make up air systems are installed and it is important for homeowners to consult with local building codes. The installation of a ducted range hood allows air to be changed efficiently which improves the quality of the environment in which you live. Even if a make up air system is not required or mandatory in a specific application, simply opening a window to the exterior can effectively assist in this process. This is something to consider in many of today's air tight homes. Please check with your building inspector whether or not you need a makeup air unit.

Make-up air for range hood, here are three options:


First option:


Lower the kitchen exhaust rates. With a decent range hood, you should be able to capture cook top smoke effectively with a fan that runs at 100 cfm to 200 cfm. At these lower exhaust rates, the problem will be reduced and could even go away.


Second option:make-up-air


Low-tech solution is to poke a big hole in your house. Building codes in the north often require that if you have a combustion appliance that is vented through a chimney without the help of a fan (atmospherically vented), your house must have a hole (typically equipped with a damper) nearby to supply makeup air. This process works, but when the appliance is not being used, the makeup-air hole is the site of a big leak that can cause comfort problems and waste energy. You also could open a kitchen window a foot or so whenever you use the exhaust fan. Of course, this solution isn’t comfortable, and it wastes energy.


Third solution:

Because your kitchen exhaust equipment is approaching the size used in commercial kitchens, you can do what commercial kitchens do. They have a separate supply-air system interlocked with the exhaust controls. When the exhaust fan is turned on, a compensating supply fan comes on and brings makeup air into the kitchen.
But that’s not all you have to think about; the fireplace is just as problematic. For both efficiency and safety when burning wood, you’re better off with some sort of a sealed combustion system. The air required to burn wood comes from outside the house, and that’s also where the smoke and the combustion gases go. High-quality woodstoves and fireplace inserts operate this way. When the glass door of the wood fireplace insert is closed, you can turn on the kitchen vent fan with no fear of flying ashes or incoming combustion gases. We also recommend that you get a good carbon-monoxide (CO) alarm. You are not likely to have a CO problem when the exhaust fan is operating. After the exhaust fan is off and the fire has burned down, however, CO could accumulate. If the CO is not removed, the consequences could be fatal.
